Prostatic Urethral Lift Procedure (Urolift)
Introduced to the NHS in the UK by Neil Barber in 2014, Urolift led the way in the shift away from simply offering TURP or laser as a surgical treatment for BPE and bothersome related symptoms, to offering a truly ambulatory option, with a rapid return to normal activity, rapid improvement in symptoms with absolutely no risk of effecting sexual function, be it ejaculation or erections. Urolift has the highest quality and most extensive evidence base of all the MISTs and as such is not only recommended by NICE in the UK but is the only one recognised in the European Association of Urology guidelines for the management of male lower urinary tract symptoms.
Under sedation of local anaesthetic, the Prostatic urethral Lift procedure involves the passing of a telescope down the water pipe and following the pushing aside and compression of the prostate lobes, the implants are delivered to open up the prostatic urethra, much like pulling apart and securing curtains. Most men avoid the need for a post operative urinary catheter ( tube into the bladder).
